Glenn Elliott Mitchell
Glenn Elliott Mitchell of Belleair, FL passed away on March 24th 2026, following a well-fought battle against Parkinson’s.
Glenn was born in Chicago, IL in 1945- the start of his lifelong love for all things Chicago. He later became a resident of Belleair Beach and Belleair Bluffs, FL.
Glenn served in the Navy during the Vietnam War and soon after studied psychology at USF.
Following college, he pursued a career at Morton Plant Hospital in the laboratory, becoming a staple in the department with his ability to problem solve and care for challenging patients. His concern for patients and their comfort became his passion. In the 1980’s, he pioneered Morton Plant’s Outreach Lab and eventually the Home Draw Team, which evolved into the BayCare Outreach Lab and Lab2Door. His guiding principle was to always do the right thing for the patient. Glenn retired as the director of the Morton Plant and BayCare Laboratories in 2008.
Glenn had a passion for exercise and sports, specifically baseball: a professional opportunity he missed out on due to being drafted. As a lifelong supporter of the Chicago Bears and White Sox, he would often be seen in fan attire and reminiscing of past games- even during off seasons.
He enjoyed spending his free time painting, writing poetry and listening to (loud) music. He was known for his compassion for animals and his concern for the well-being of others. He was the proudest of fathers, had an excellent sense of humor, and a determination to thrive despite his diagnosis.
Glenn is survived by his son, Chris Mitchell (Miriam); daughters Erin Mitchell (Nicholas Faraone) and April Perkins; brother Dean Mitchell; and his grandchildren, Jake and Mallory Mitchell. Glenn was preceded in death by his wife, Donna Zendegui Mitchell; his father Kenneth Mitchell; mother Shirley Burkman; and his brother, Ken Mitchell.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, April 12th, at O’Keefe’s Restaurant in Clearwater, Florida, beginning at 4PM, with a flag presentation and sharing of memories at 5PM.
In memory of Glenn, please consider a donation to Dogs Inc. (Formerly Southeastern Guide Dogs) in lieu of flowers.
